Narrative Reflection – CHANGE

Change is inevitable for all of us. What do people learn from change? Let us grow? Gain experience? I am a person who does not like changes, including changes in lifestyle, environment, and interpersonal relationship, which make me feel pressure. I was a very timid person, afraid to try new things. But I’ve found that I’ve changed a lot in recent years. I dare to try a lot of things, dare to express themselves, I am willing to take that step, I think this is the change.

About Me

I was born in a relatively wealthy family, from childhood to growing up, everything was arranged by my parents. My parents just wanted me to grow up happy and healthy, so to speak. They don’t care about my grades and will give me a lot of things I want (cell phone, computer, clothes, bags, etc.). I know this is spoiling, so I often want to escape their “comfort zone". I want to prove that I am a useful person through my ability. So I choose to do part-time job, which is a shortcut for me to express myself.

Part-time Job

I started my part-time job 4 years ago. My first part-time job was as a buffet waiter at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. I feel lucky that the Disney Hotel is a very friendly working environment. But I was still afraid, after all, it was my first part-time job. I’m afraid I won’t perform well at work, I’m afraid my boss will judge me, and I’m afraid to communicate with customers and colleagues. So in the first half month, I was very stressed. But then I got praise from the leader, which made me confident and I began to try, even push myself. I found it easy. I learned to communicate with customers confidently and consult colleagues and leaders boldly if I have any questions. This was a step in my transformation. I learned to be proactive and brave.

My second part-time job was as a waiter in Haidilao, which required enthusiasm. Simply put, the customer takes care of ordering and eating, and I do everything else. It’s still a lot of work. It’s very difficult. But I also learned a lot. It even helped me. We are guests who serve everyone by region. As a result, 20 tables are usually served. So teamwork is very important. At first I didn’t know how to assign the work, so I was always in a hurry. I understand the importance of teamwork, so I learned how to deal with teamwork in school.

Full-time Job

Because of the COV-19, I stayed in Shenzhen and lived with my parents for one year. I do nothing at home every day. So I got anxious, and I started looking for a job. I happened to see Tencent’s job Posting, which required to know Hong Kong , know English and Cantonese, etc. I met those requirements, so I went for an interview and passed the interview. I became a member of Tencent and was responsible for the government consumption volume project of WeChat Pay HK. I can’t imagine it. But I’ve never had any experience in writing before, so I keep asking my tutor for advice. I spent half a month to communicate with customers. Although THERE were many things I didn’t understand, I began to get used to the high-intensity work. I began to understand the requirements of the client and I could clearly sort out the work that could be connected with the client. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has directly affected and accelerated many future of work trends (eg, remote work, expanding employers’ role as ‘‘a social safety net’’) (IW Staff,2020) As the client I interacted with was in Hong Kong, it was difficult for us to communicate detailed information face-to-face. We communicated with each other through WeChat meetings. I have lost count of the hundreds or thousands of WeChat meetings I called. So it’s not hard to see the importance of media. Especially with the current pandemic, remote working has become an almost indispensable work environment. I worked at Tencent for 5 months and had to quit because I had to go back to Hong Kong to study. At the end of the work, I realized my areas of expertise and other abilities that I lacked. I learned time management skills, problem solving skills and leadership skills.
